Review: Psychopomp & Circumstance

Psychopomp & Circumstance by Eden Royce My rating: 5 of 5 stars "In some circles, folk would have called Auntie a witch, but there is a different kind of magic that comes over a person when they are content in themselves. They are a silent presence, an impenetrable force that radiates so strongly it calls others." "Choice. It came down to that in the end, really. The choices we make, the chances we have. Some of us have too little to make a life yet still manage it somehow." This was a really charming story about a young woman freeing herself from an overbearing mother and finding herself by grieving the loss of her favorite aunt. Sometimes, we have to leave everything behind to find who we are, who we're meant to be. View all my reviews

Review: The Possession of Alba Díaz

The Possession of Alba Díaz by Isabel Cañas My rating: 3 of 5 stars Trigger/Content Warning: - violence - demonic possession - religious inquisition - misogyny Possession: (n): to own Possession: (n): DOMINATION Heavy with themes of religion, patriarchy, greed, familial manipulation, and bodily autonomy, The Possession of Alba Diaz boils down to one central thing: freedom. Everyone in this book wanted freedom, from greed, debt, society, and family; hell, even the demon wanted to be free. But freedom isn't free. NOTHING is free. Alba and, especially, Elias learned that the hard way. View all my reviews
